It will press the strings down to the fretboard and not slip. Several of the nicer capos have a mechnism to adjust the width of the capo. This allows you to customize the grip of the capo to minimize the pressure on the fretboard and neck. Always place a guitar capo directly behind a fret wire, that is, as close to the guitar body as possible without actually touching the fret wire. This ensures that you don't throw the guitar out of tune as you use your capo.
