Handpan care recommendations

The handpan is a special instrument that allows you to explore the soul deeply through meditative melodies. In this article, you will find tips on how to care for your handpan so that it can play expressive melodies for a lifetime.

To achieve the best sound, strike the instrument with your fingers at a fast pace. Your fingers should touch the handpan quickly. Stronger strikes produce a better sound. Avoid playing with your palms (as when playing the djembe) and never use mallets or sticks to avoid damaging the instrument. Remove rings and other metal objects from your hands. In public places, protect the instrument from possible contact with solid objects.

Handpan maintenance

Proper handpan maintenance will ensure stable operation and a beautiful appearance. The handpan must be regularly lubricated with oil.

1. Do not expose the handpan to water or aggressive liquids such as alcohol wipes and cleaning agents. If the instrument comes into contact with water, wipe it dry immediately and then lubricate it with oil.

2. Sweat from your hands causes corrosion of the instrument. Remember to wipe the surface of the handpan with a dry microfiber cloth after each playing session.

3. The handpan should be regularly lubricated with oil. The timing of this procedure depends on the humidity in the room where your instrument is located. If it is dry to the touch, then it is time to lubricate it with oil. Both the front and back of the instrument should be lubricated. Lubricate the handpan once a month for reliability.

4. Use fractionated coconut oil (a liquid form of coconut oil) to effectively prevent corrosion without tarnishing or dulling the instrument. Apply a small amount of oil to a cloth and gently rub the surface of the handpan until all areas are covered (including the inside of the hole, as this can become dirty from the instrument gripping the inside). When finished, wipe the surface again to remove excess oil from the body. The inside surface does not need to be oiled, but if it is dirty, follow the above process.

5. Avoid storing the handpan in the bag for long periods of time to prevent corrosion. Provide ventilation by leaving the handpan outside the case if possible or by unzipping the bag to allow air flow.

6. To ensure long-term tuning, be careful not to drop the instrument or hit it against hard surfaces.

7. Protect the handpan from direct sunlight.
