Atlantic Records relies on LEWITT mics to capture American boyband’s acoustic performance for live stream.

New York, USA – June 2019...
When Atlantic Studios NYC hosted a live performance by US boyband Why Don’t We to be streamed to fans in Japan, the facility turned to its collection of LEWITT microphones as the perfect tools to capture their sound.
Atlantic Records and its studio in New York have long been names associated with cutting-edge recording. The list of artists to have created hit albums at the original facility reads like a who’s who of the music industry, while from a technical point of view, the studio also helped to pioneer the science of stereo and multi-track recording. The same emphasis on artist development and recording excellence is the driving force behind Atlantic Records’ new Atlantic Studios NYC.
While building on the ethos of its illustrious predecessor, this new recording facility is starting to create its own history. This has seen it recognised for its role in the Grammy Award-winning recording of Hamilton (Original Broadway Cast) while also serving as a creative hub for some of the best new talent around.
One such act is Why Don’t We, who, since forming in 2016, have embraced grassroots engagement in the digital arena as the way to build a diehard fan base. This, combined with a prolific outpouring of new music and sold out headline tours, has seen the band described as one of pop music’s biggest breakout stories, attracting fans from all over the world.

The combination of fan engagement and new music saw the band perform an acoustic version of their hit “I Don’t Belong In This Club” in a session organised by Warner Music Japan in cooperation with Line Music. The performance was live streamed from Atlantic Studios NYC and viewed by 640,000 people.
The main challenge for the project was combining the live performance and visual aspects of the stream with the studio-quality sound expected from such a prestigious location. The only option that Atlantic Studios could see to achieve such a fine balance was its arsenal of LEWITT microphones.
«I used our three MTP 550’s and two MTP 940 CM handheld microphones,» explains Joseph Pomarico, producer and engineer at Atlantic Records. «LEWITT has stepped up the game when it comes to making a handheld mic. I love the technology on the MTP 940, where LEWITT has designed a large diaphragm condenser recording microphone to look like a handheld, and the dynamic MTP 550, which has a great sound and can handle anything you throw in front of it.»
«Their size doesn't disturb the look of the video and allowed the players to move around in a stage setting, and the mics are clear, transparent and focused without bleed. I am very happy that I choose to use LEWITT».
