The career of recording and mixing artist Brian Vibberts started out like many others: he studied music production and engineering at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, the premier training institution for aspiring music producers. And because a Berklee education means you learn what you need to learn in order to get really, really good, Brian got hired straight out of school by Right Track Records, one of the most important studios in New York City. Which meant he had artists like Maria Carey, Living Color and the Brecker Brothers in his discography right from the start — and when you do that, you tend to show up quickly on the music industry’s radar. And to stay there.
After moving on to New York’s legendary Hit Factory, Brian spent the brief period between 1993 and 1995 working with figures like Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Celine Dion, Meatloaf, David Lee Roth and the Dave Matthews Band, and he also worked together with Michael Jackson for nearly a year on the album HiStory. When Hit Factory decided to open its new Studio One, specializing in film scores and Broadway productions, it was clear that Brian Vibberts would have a hand in getting things running.
There, Brian added orchestral recordings to his portfolio, and within four years he had succeeded in attracting a huge number of big names to the new studio — including (once again) Michael Jackson, as well as Kathleen Battle, Heavy D, Tommy Mottola, Clive Davis, Don Ienner, Ahmet Ertegun and Dave Glew.
In 1995, Brian was hired as an engineer by industry giant Sony Music Studios. His expertise and his empathetic touch with artists scored him projects with Tony Bennett, Mariah Carey, Sting, Garth Brooks, Lauryn Hill, Jewel, Bruce Springsteen and — a further big highlight of his career — mixing Herbie Hancock’s album Gershwin’s World, which won 4 of 5 Grammy nominations including “Jazz Album of the Year”.
After nine years at New York’s largest and most influential studios, Brian Vibberts decided to switch coasts and move to Los Angeles. During the three years he spent collaborating with mixer Jack Joseph Puig at Ocean Way Recording, Brian worked together with Mick Jagger, Fiona Apple, Paul McCartney, Tim McGraw, Clint Black, Joss Stone and Counting Crows.
In LA, a city where everybody knows everybody else, Brian’s good reputation had been quick to make the rounds — and MTV was quick to take note. MTV and VH-1 hired Brian to work on their biggest live shows: the 2002 MTV Icon Award for Aerosmith with Pink, Shakira, Train and Janet Jackson, and the 2003 MTV Icon Award show for Metallica with Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, Limp Bizkit, Korn and Staind. He also collaborated with Effanel Music at the 2001 Grammy Awards with U2, Destiny’s Child, the Dave Matthews Band and Bob Dylan. And he worked at the MTV Video Music Awards with Christina Aguilera and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. As well as at the 2000 My VH-1 Music Awards with U2, No Doubt, Bon Jovi...
It’s difficult to interrupt this virtually endless list, a list that includes the greatest artists of the past couple decades and lays no claim to completeness — Brian’s credits are way to extensive for that. It all bears witness not just to Brian's technical know-how, but also to his people skills — an invaluable asset in an industry where everything comes down to those nuances and expressive details that, in the end, can make or break a recording. Even after having worked for over 20 years in the industry, including participation in 250 Grammy-nominated and 65 Grammy-awarded projects as well as countless live shows, Brian Vibberts continues to learn and grow with every new project, staying on the technological cutting edge and getting the best out of every recording.
