When Oomph! came together in 1989, word of the band spread rapidly ... and just a year later they had already signed their first record contract with Machinery Records, a Berlin-based electro label. International hits — such as the 1992 maxi “Ich und Du” — were quick to follow, and by 1993 Oomph! was already playing sold-out New York club gigs. Following their switch to major label Virgin Records in Munich, the 1998 album Unrein and the 1999 smash hits “Das weiße Licht” and “Fieber feat. Nina Hagen” from the album Plastik provided them with their ultimate breakthrough, above all in Germany. An absolute highlight came in 2004 — the single “Augen Auf!” went gold and platinum in Germany and gold in Austria, and it hit No.1 for five weeks and stayed in the Top Ten for a total of 15 weeks. The corresponding album Wahrheit und Pflicht likewise took gold in Germany and Austria, rising to No.2 in the German charts. That same year, Oomph! was named “Best Band of the Year” by German radio network 1 Live. In 2007, the Lower Saxons won Germany’s nationwide Bundesvision Song Contest on Pro 7 with the song “Träumst Du feat. Marta Jandová”, the single of which made No.9 on the German charts.
The most impressive thing of all about Oomph! is the band’s authenticity. The point is not to be controversial, but simply to have an opinion — even if that opinion may seem unsettlingly nonconformist to “the broad masses”, for which reason the band has found itself disinvited from this or that media event. Music videos where archetypically beautiful people are occasionally replaced by senior citizens for the love scenes, declarations of God as a pop star even right up front in a title, and open references to poverty in Germany and condemnation of financial speculators during concerts are all to be understood more as a mirror of society than as shock-rock marketing.
After having made Truth or Dare, their first album in English, Oomph! went on to release their twelfth studio album, Des Wahnsinns Fette Beute, on 18 May 2012 — which they celebrated with a European tour. And this is where LEWITT comes into play. A brief talk with Flux, followed up by a meeting at the prolight+sound fair in Frankfurt, made it abundantly clear that the band and LEWITT seek to uphold near-identical standards of authenticity and sound quality. Their initial test of the LCT 640, the Beat Kit Pro 7 and the handheld MTP 540 DM vocal mic was just the first step — by now, almost all microphones on stage with them are by LEWITT.
And with 7 people in the band, that’s quite a few: 2 x MTP 240 DMs, 7 x MTP 340, 6 x LCT 640, 4 x LCT 340, 6 x DTP 340 TT, 4 x MTP 440 DM and 2 x DTP 640 REX are used to mic every live performance. Though the LCT 640 has become a special favorite of theirs by now, the tough demands that a tour puts on human beings and their equipment have been withstood by all of these mics with aplomb. And the tour in question included festivals like Novarock in Austria and the legendary Wacken Open Air in Germany — in other words, festivals that are grueling in far more than just the musical sense.
