The Electro-Voice PL-35 is a professional-grade supercardioid dynamic microphone designed to deliver the powerful, punchy and natural tones of toms and snares in PA systems or recording studios of any size. With a frequency response designed for the specific tonal region occupied by toms and snares, the PL35 provides all the tonal detail and percussive impact professional drummers and PA engineers need. The PL35's tight supercardioid polar polar pattern is designed to minimize off-axis sounds from nearby drums and instruments entering the capsule, resulting in highly isolated instrument sounds and higher gain before feedback. Cable clutter and tight spaces are always a problem when voicing toms and snares, so the PL35's clever 37.5° cable exit angle reduces the vertical space above the drum required to accommodate the XLR connector and cable. The PL35 comes with a unique DRC-1 clamp that eliminates the need for a floor stand and boom and allows the microphone to be easily attached to the steel rim.
Like most directional microphones, the PL35's low-frequency response varies depending on the distance from the sound source. Known as the “proximity effect,” a microphone's low-frequency response increases as the operating distance from the microphone decreases. This "bass boost" is only audible when operating closer than 6 inches. Therefore, when working close to a microphone, the sound will be richer. Using this microphone at a distance greater than 6 inches ensures minimal sound coloration due to proximity effects. Placing the microphone close also reduces the likelihood of feedback from the PA system. In this case, the bass boost increases the overall output level of the microphone. The mixer's gain can be proportionally reduced, making the system less sensitive to feedback generated by sound entering the microphone from the speakers.
