Instrument Microphone Electro-Voice PL-37

The Electro-Voice PL-37 is a professional-grade, tight cardioid condenser microphone designed to capture all the crisp detail of cymbals, hi-hats and drums on stage or in the studio. The PL37 provides all the precise tone and transient response detail professional drummers and sound engineers need. The PL37's tight cardioid polar pattern is designed to minimize off-axis information from nearby stage instruments entering the capsule, resulting in cleaner drum kit sounds and higher gain before feedback. Although the PL37 is designed as a boom microphone for drum kits and percussion, it can also be used as a microphone for acoustic instruments where a capsule with a condenser element is required.

This microphone requires external power to operate, usually supplied through the phantom power feature on your mixer or sound system input module. Like most directional microphones, the PL37's low-frequency response varies depending on the distance from the sound source. Known as the “proximity effect,” a microphone's low-frequency response increases as the operating distance from the microphone decreases. This "bass boost" is only audible when operating closer than 6 inches. Therefore, when working at a close distance from the microphone, the sound will be more saturated. Using this microphone at a distance greater than 6 inches ensures minimal sound coloration due to proximity effects. Placing the microphone close also reduces the likelihood of feedback from the PA system. In this case, the bass boost increases the overall output level of the microphone. The mixer's gain can be proportionally reduced, making the system less sensitive to feedback generated by sound entering the microphone from the speakers.
