The Electro-Voice RE20 is a professional cardioid dynamic microphone that has been widely used in radio broadcasting since 1968. Designed by Electro-Voice using proprietary Variable-D technology and a large diaphragm element, it has been called an "iconic" microphone in the industry due to its natural sound and widespread use in radio, television and recording studios. In 2015, RE20 was inducted into the TEC Awards Technology Hall of Fame. The wide frequency response combined with excellent transient response makes the RE20 comparable to the best cardioid condenser microphones, and an easy-to-operate switch adjusts the spectral balance for use in long-range environments or other applications where low-frequency attenuation is required. As a true cardioid microphone, the RE20 provides the greatest rejection 180º off-axis - directly to the rear of the microphone. The radiation pattern control is so consistent that the frequency response is virtually independent of the angular position of the sound source, creating virtually no off-axis coloration and providing the greatest possible suppression of unwanted sounds. A built-in blast and wind noise filter covers every acoustic hole on the RE20.
While recording or on stage, singers can “get close” to the microphone and sing with their lips almost touching the microphone grille without fear of explosive sounds. The filter portion also cushions the microphone's internal element, reducing the transmission of vibrations from external sources. The RE20's exceptional performance is achieved through the use of a large Acous-talloy diaphragm combined with an exceptionally low weight aluminum voice coil. Thanks to this diaphragm arrangement, the RE20 is able to reproduce very high sound pressure levels without the risk of overload and distortion that often occurs when using phantom-powered capacitors. In addition, the RE20 continues to perform flawlessly in high humidity and high temperature environments that significantly degrade the performance of competitive condenser microphones. The massive steel body and effective anti-noise coil ensure that the RE20 is resistant to induced magnetic noise and interference. This means that the RE20 can be used successfully in situations where other microphones have unacceptable levels of hum and noise. The proximity effect that enhances low frequencies that is typical of most directional microphones when used close to a sound source has been eliminated in the RE20. This is achieved through the use of exclusive EV Variable-D technology. Thanks to microphone proximity effect control, the RE20 can be positioned very close to sound sources without losing definition or clarity, making it ideal for dense sounds and complex instruments. It can be used inside bass drums, on acoustic guitars, as well as in voice booths and broadcast studios.
