M83 is a French musical project that originated in the city of Antibes in 1999. Originally a duo consisting of Nicolas Fromagio and Anthony Gonzalez, Fromagio later left the group after a tour in support of their second album, Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts. However, Gonzalez continued to create under the M83 label and became the only permanent member of the project, acting as the main songwriter and lead vocalist. The group released nine studio albums, including the successful album "Hurry Up, We're Dreaming", for which they were nominated for the prestigious Grammy Music Award. Gonzalez usually records music independently, but also collaborates with numerous musicians.
The album "Fantasy" is the ninth studio release by the French group M83, which was released on March 17, 2023. Released via Virgin Records France and Mute Records, it was announced alongside the lead single "Oceans Niagara" on 10 January 2023. The band toured North America and Europe from April to August 2023 in support of the album. Work on Fantasy continued throughout 2021, with lead writer Anthony Gonzalez, contributor Joe Berry, and producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen. González described the album as "a gift to myself", made without the pressure of commercial success, which helped him focus on musical experimentation. "Fantasy" also emphasizes the interplay of guitars and synthesizers, approaching the energy of the group's previous works, in particular the album "Before the Dawn Heals Us" (2005).
