His work with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which brings together young musicians from different countries, shows his desire to use music as a means of peace and harmony.

He has received numerous awards, including seven Grammy Awards, an honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the French Legion of Honor, and the Grand Cross of the German Federal Order with Star and Ribbon.
