Deep Purple is a British rock band formed in London in 1967. They are known as pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although their musical style evolved over the years. Initially, the band performed in the genres of psychedelic and progressive rock, but from 1970 their sound became heavier. The band is also known for their loud performances, including their 1972 concert at the Rainbow Theatre in London, where they were listed in the Guinness Book of Records as "the loudest band on the planet".

Stormbringer is the ninth studio album by the British rock band Deep Purple, released in November 1974. This was the band's second album with the Mk III lineup, featuring vocalist David Coverdale and bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes. The album cover is inspired by the famous photograph of a tornado taken by Lucille Handberg in 1927. The album's title is a reference to the magical sword "Stormbringer" from the Michael Moorcock series of novels, although Coverdale claimed to have learned about it only after recording the album.
