Dire Straits is a British rock band formed in London in 1977. The group included musicians such as Mark Knopfler (vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Pick Withers (drums and percussion). They were active from 1977 to 1988 and then again from 1990 to 1995. The musical style of Dire Straits was influenced by various genres, including country, folk, J. J. Cale's blues-rock, and jazz. Their straightforward sound differed from punk rock and showcased the influence of roots rock, which emerged from pub rock. The band underwent several lineup changes, but Mark Knopfler and Illsley remained the only members who worked with the band throughout its entire history.
