Lady Gaga  is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She began her creative journey in her teenage years, performing at open mic nights and participating in school plays. After her contract with Def Jam Recordings was canceled, Gaga started working as a songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and in 2007, she signed a contract with Interscope Records and KonLive Distribution. Artpop is a studio album by American singer Lady Gaga, released on November 6, 2013, by Streamline and Interscope Records. The album's preparation began in 2011, shortly after the release of her second album, Born This Way. Work on the project continued until 2013 when Gaga was touring for Born This Way Ball and recovering from surgery for an injury she had sustained while touring. Gaga described Artpop as "a celebration and a poetic musical journey". The album consciously departs from the more mature and anthemic nature of Born This Way, showcasing a "lack of maturity and responsibility." Artpop combines EDM and synth-pop with elements of R&B, techno, industrial, and dubstep, and its themes cover Gaga's personal views on fame, sex, and self-empowerment. It also features guest vocals from T.I., Too Short, Twista, and R. Kelly. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the album achieved success on international charts and became one of the best-selling albums of 2013.
