McCoy Tyner (1938–2020) was an American jazz pianist and composer, known for his collaboration with the John Coltrane Quartet from 1960 to 1965, and his long solo career. He is one of the most influential jazz pianists of all time, a five-time Grammy Award winner, and an NEA Jazz Master. His unique piano style was shaped by influences such as Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk and became an integral part of modern jazz development.
The Real McCoy is the seventh album by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner, recorded in 1967 after his departure from the John Coltrane Quartet and released on the Blue Note label. The album features prominent musicians such as saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Elvin Jones. The album was highly praised by critics for its authenticity and dedication to jazz tradition. Compositions like "Passion Dance" and "Contemplation" carry a deep spiritual undertone, while "Blues on the Corner" evokes Tyner's nostalgic memories of his childhood in Philadelphia.
