Nirvana is a legendary American rock band formed in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington. They became one of the most influential music groups of the 1990s and pioneers of the "grunge" style. The band consisted of three main members: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar), Krist Novoselic (bass guitar), and Dave Grohl (drums), who joined the band in 1990. Despite their brief existence, Nirvana left a deep mark on music history. The band disbanded in 1994 following Kurt Cobain's tragic death. MTV Unplugged in New York is the first live album by the American rock band Nirvana, released on November 1, 1994, nearly seven months after Kurt Cobain's suicide. The album was recorded during the band's performance on MTV Unplugged on November 18, 1993, at Sony Music Studios in New York. The concert featured acoustic versions of their songs as well as covers of songs by the Vaselines, David Bowie, Lead Belly, and Meat Puppets. The album also features musicians such as rhythm guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified 8x Platinum in 2020. In 1996, it won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
