Rick Wakeman is a prominent British keyboardist and composer who gained fame for his role in the progressive rock band Yes. His career spans several decades, and he has been a member of the band in five different periods between 1971 and 2004. Wakeman also has a successful solo career, having released over 90 albums. Among his most notable works are “The Six Wives of Henry VIII” and “Journey to the Centre of the Earth,” which showcase his skill in blending classical music with rock. In addition to his musical career, Wakeman is known for his work on television and radio, as well as being the author of several books. His unique keyboard style has made him one of the key figures in the world of progressive rock.
The album "Piano Portraits" is a great example of his piano mastery. Following the positive response to his performance of David Bowie’s “Life on Mars?,” Wakeman decided to create an album featuring piano versions of his favorite compositions. “Piano Portraits” includes both classical pieces and songs he performed as a session musician, including works from the Yes repertoire. The album reached number 6 on the UK Albums Chart and became Wakeman's highest-charting album in the UK since 1975, earning a silver certification for sales of over 60,000 copies. The success of "Piano Portraits" led to the creation of a follow-up album titled "Piano Odyssey" in 2018.
