At the time, it was a project, a required course in the Computer Science program at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The three founders were Daniel Hansson, Anders Gärder and Mikael Räim. The synthesizer, called SidStation, was initially produced in a trial batch of ten units. The project was deemed commercially viable, so in 1998 Elektron ESI was created to develop it. Jonas Hillman later stepped in to provide the management, structural reform and capital needed to develop the company. Since then, he has served as CEO, principal owner and spokesman for the company, later renamed Elektron Music Machines. With Hillman at the helm, Elektron offices have been opened in Los Angeles and Tokyo.
