Art Blakey (October 11, 1919 – October 16, 1990) was an American jazz drummer and conductor. He gained popularity in the 1940s in the orchestras of Fletcher Henderson and Billy Eckstein. He later collaborated with bebop musicians Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie. In the mid-1950s, he co-founded the Jazz Messengers with Horace Silver, which he led for the next 35 years.
Caravan is an album by Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers that was first released in 1963 on Riverside Records. In addition to Blakey, the group included such outstanding musicians as Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Wayne Shorter (saxophone), Cedar Walton (piano), and Reggie Workman (bass). This is an album noted for its sophisticated jazz sound and excellent performance. It is part of the Original Jazz Classics series and reflects the talent and creativity of the legendary Jazz Messengers.
