The album's material is inspired by jazz standards of the 1920s and 1930s, which the singer found among her father's vinyl records. These compositions were reinterpreted with a brilliant lineup of musicians, including guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Jay Bellerose, bassist Dennis Crouch and keyboardist Kifus Ciancia. The music on Glad Rag Doll is characterized by a warm analog sound, with jazz, blues, and country influences.
