Sir Georg Solti was a Hungarian-British conductor, known for his work with opera companies in Munich, Frankfurt, and London, as well as his long-standing position as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Born in Budapest, he studied music with Béla Bartók and Ernő Dohnányi. During World War II, he was forced to leave Hungary due to anti-Semitic laws. After the war, he worked in opera houses in Munich, Frankfurt, and London, and became the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1969. Solti made over 250 recordings, including the famous full cycle of Richard Wagner's "The Ring of the Nibelung." He received 31 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists in history.
Sir Edward William Elgar was an English composer whose works entered the classical repertoire of Great Britain and the world. Among the most famous are the "Enigma Variations," the "Pomp and Circumstance Marches," concertos for violin and cello, two symphonies, and choral works, including "The Dream of Gerontius." Although he is considered a typically English composer, his musical influences came from continental Europe. Elgar felt like an outsider due to his Catholic background and modest social standing. He achieved recognition in his forties, and his music saw a revival in the 1960s.
Edward Elgar recorded his "Enigma Variations" over 60 times, starting with the first recording in 1924 under his direction. The first two recordings were made using the old acoustic method. After the introduction of the microphone in 1925, Elgar re-recorded the work, using the new process with improved sound realism. New recordings began to appear after the invention of vinyl records in the 1950s, and with the introduction of stereo recording at the end of the decade.
