His real breakthrough came in the 1970s, when his albums began topping the charts in both the UK and the US, starting with "Honky Château" (1972) and continuing through "Rock of the Westies" (1975). His hit single "Your Song" became a defining moment, establishing him as one of the most significant musicians of his era. Madman Across the Water is Elton John’s fourth studio album, released on 5 November 1971. It was his third album of the year, reflecting the rapid pace of his rising stardom. The album marked John’s first venture into progressive rock, containing nine tracks with music composed by John and lyrics by Bernie Taupin. The recording featured guest musicians, including Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman and arranger Paul Buckmaster. Despite modest chart performance in the UK, the album found great success in the United States, eventually achieving multi-platinum status. Notable hits from the album include "Levon" and "Tiny Dancer", which have since become classics. In 2022, the album was reissued for its 50th anniversary with bonus material. Although critical reception at the time was mixed, "Madman Across the Water" has gained recognition over time and was included in the list "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die".
