Jay-Z is an American rapper, songwriter, executive producer, and entrepreneur, considered one of the most influential artists in hip-hop history. Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, Jay-Z became a genre icon, having sold over 140 million records, won 24 Grammy Awards, and received numerous other accolades. He helped launch many successful artists’ careers, served as CEO of Def Jam Recordings, and became the first rapper to reach billionaire status. His name is included in the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Time magazine has repeatedly named him one of the most influential people in the world.

The Black Album is the eighth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z, released on November 14, 2003, by Roc-A-Fella Records and Def Jam Recordings. Initially intended as his farewell album before retirement, this theme is echoed throughout many of the tracks, although Jay-Z returned to music in 2005. For the album, he brought in a different producer for each track – including Kanye West, The Neptunes, Just Blaze, Timbaland, Eminem, Rick Rubin, and others. The album also features a guest appearance by Pharrell Williams. It received critical acclaim and major commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with over 460,000 copies sold in its first week. The Black Album was later certified quadruple platinum and named among the best albums of the 2000s by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Slant Magazine. Songs like "Encore", "99 Problems", and "Dirt off Your Shoulder" became hits and were featured on the collaborative EP Collision Course with Linkin Park. In 2004, Danger Mouse released the controversial mashup The Grey Album, blending Jay-Z’s vocals with instrumentals from The Beatles’ "White Album".
