John Coltrane (1926–1967) – American jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer, one of the most influential musicians in the history of jazz and 20th-century music. Born and raised in North Carolina, he moved to Philadelphia after high school to study music. Working in the bebop and hard bop styles, Coltrane helped pioneer modal approaches and was one of the forerunners of free jazz. Over his career, he participated in over 50 recording sessions and collaborated with musicians such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. Coltrane's music gradually took on a spiritual dimension, most notably in the album A Love Supreme (1965).
Crescent is a studio album by John Coltrane, released in July 1964 on the Impulse! label. The recording features Coltrane on tenor saxophone, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on double bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, performing original Coltrane compositions. A notable feature of the album is that Coltrane does not solo on the second side of the LP, where the ballad "Lonnie's Lament" features a long bass solo, and the closing track is a drum improvisation with minimal accompaniment from saxophone and bass.
The album contains 5 tracks.
