John Lennon (John Winston Ono Lennon; 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980) was an English musician and activist who gained worldwide fame as the founder, co-lead vocalist, and rhythm guitarist of The Beatles. Lennon, together with Paul McCartney, formed one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in music history. His work spanned music, film, and literature, and songs like "All You Need Is Love" became anthems of the anti-war movement and 1960s counterculture. After The Beatles disbanded, he pursued a solo career with albums such as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Double Fantasy, as well as hits including "Imagine," "Give Peace a Chance," and "Instant Karma!" Lennon received numerous awards and recognition, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and Rolling Stone named him the fifth greatest singer of all time.

Imagine is John Lennon's second solo studio album, released on 9 September 1971 by Apple Records. Co-produced by Lennon, his wife Yoko Ono, and Phil Spector, the album features a more elaborate sound compared to his previous album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. Tracks were recorded at Ascot Sound Studios, EMI Recording Studios, and the Record Plant in New York City, with musicians including George Harrison, Nicky Hopkins, Klaus Voormann, Alan White, and Jim Keltner. The lyrics reflect themes of peace, love, politics, and Lennon's personal experiences, including criticism of Paul McCartney in the song "How Do You Sleep?". The album was both a commercial and critical success, topping the UK Albums Chart and US Billboard 200, and is considered one of Lennon's best solo works. In 2012, it was ranked 80th on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
