Nina Simone (1933–2003) – American singer, pianist, songwriter, and civil rights activist. Her music spans classical, folk, gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and pop styles. From childhood, she aspired to become a concert pianist, but her path led to jazz when she began singing to her own accompaniment in Atlantic City nightclubs. After her debut album Little Girl Blue in 1958, Simone recorded over 40 albums and became known for her hits and active civic engagement.
High Priestess of Soul – a studio album by Nina Simone with accompaniment by a large orchestra directed and arranged by Hal Mooney. The record combines pop songs such as "Don't You Pay Them No Mind" with African American gospel and folk songs written by Simone, including "Take Me to the Water" and "Come Ye". The album title, suggested by management, gave her the nickname "High Priestess of Soul," though Simone herself rejected this label, not wanting to be confined by it.
The album contains 12 tracks.
