Ornette Coleman (1930–2015) was an American saxophonist, composer, and founder of the free jazz genre. His music often rejected traditional elements of harmony, tonality, and rhythm, focusing on experimental improvisation and ensemble performance. Coleman became an influential figure in jazz music, with his 1960 album "Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation" giving the name to the entire free jazz movement. He also received the Pulitzer Prize for his work in 2007.
"Something Else!!!! The Music of Ornette Coleman" is Coleman’s debut album, released in September 1958. It was a significant moment in jazz history, as it reshaped the genre by blending blues and jazz, returning blues to its African musical roots. The album features a traditional bebop instrumentation, including saxophone, cornet, piano, bass, and drums; however, this was his last release featuring piano. Afterward, Coleman began creating a more open and fluid sound, abandoning the piano in his future recordings. "Something Else!!!!" received critical acclaim and became an important step in the formation of a new era in jazz.
