Public Enemy is one of the most influential groups in the history of hip-hop, turning rap into a political weapon. Founded in 1985 in New York City by Chuck D and Flavor Flav, the group gained a reputation for its uncompromising social criticism against racism, media manipulation, and the US political system. Their early albums, including It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, were breakthroughs in both content and sound. Public Enemy boldly used collages of samples, which later became the hallmark of The Bomb Squad's production team. Led by Chuck D, their work has always combined intellectual depth with the unbridled energy of protest. In 2013, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2020, they were awarded the Grammy for Lifetime Achievement.
The album Fear of a Black Planet (1990) is the culmination of Public Enemy's creative and ideological evolution, combining a powerful sound with deep social messages. This release is a response to racial injustice, media propaganda, and internal crises, including the Professor Griff scandal, which forced the band to rethink its mission. Produced by The Bomb Squad, the album impresses with the intensity of its soundscape: multi-layered samples, aggressive beats, news and radio fragments create the effect of an information assault. Tracks like “Fight the Power”, “Welcome to the Terrordome” and “Burn Hollywood Burn” sound like manifestos of social struggle, while “Fear of a Black Planet” and “Who Stole the Soul?” deeply analyze racial dynamics in America. This album cemented Public Enemy's status as a politically conscious artist, and the record itself was recognized as culturally significant - it was included in the US National Recording Registry and ranked 176th in the updated Rolling Stone rankings.
