Bill Evans was a prominent American jazz pianist and composer, renowned for his virtuosity in trio settings and significant influence on the development of jazz music. His harmonic decisions, block chords, and innovative approaches to rhythm continue to influence jazz pianists today. After the tragic death of LaFaro, Evans assembled a new trio and continued to actively record music. His compositions "Waltz for Debby" and "Time Remembered" became jazz classics. Throughout his career, Evans received 31 Grammy nominations and seven awards.
Moon Beams is a 1962 album by the renowned jazz pianist Bill Evans, marking the first trio album recorded after the death of his bassist Scott LaFaro. The album features two important original compositions by Evans: "Re: Person I Knew" (an anagram of his producer Orrin Keepnews's name) and "Very Early," which Evans composed while in university. The album consists mostly of ballads recorded in May and June of 1962, and is known for its deep, intimate sound. Chuck Israels replaced LaFaro as the bassist, and his more traditional style brought a more restrained sound to the group. The album received critical acclaim for its refinement and emotional depth, with some critics considering Evans's performance on this record equivalent to classical masterpieces.
