John Coltrane was one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time. He was a saxophonist, composer, and leader of jazz ensembles. Coltrane was born in Hamlet, North Carolina, in 1926. He started playing the saxophone at a young age and soon became one of the most talented saxophonists in the country. In the 1950s, Coltrane formed his own quartet, which became one of the most important jazz ensembles of its time. Coltrane was known for his experimental improvisations, which were often long and complex. He was also a master of arrangement and frequently used complex harmonies and rhythms. Coltrane continued to record and tour throughout the 1960s. His music became increasingly experimental and spiritual. He was one of the first jazz musicians to experiment with Indian music and spiritual practices.
Red Garland (real name William McKinley Garland Jr.) was an outstanding American jazz pianist, born on May 13, 1923, in Dallas, Texas. He initially studied clarinet and alto saxophone, but during his military service, he began learning the piano. After World War II, Garland performed with well-known jazz musicians, and in 1955, he joined the famous Miles Davis Quintet, where he played alongside such distinguished musicians as John Coltrane and Paul Chambers. Garland helped popularize the block chord style of playing, which became his signature style.
Dig It! is a jazz album by the Red Garland Quintet, recorded in 1957 and 1958 but not released until 1962 on the Prestige label. The album is part of a series of informal sessions that Garland recorded with John Coltrane in the late 1950s. Critic Harvey Pekar noted the high quality of the album, calling it another successful collaboration between Garland and Coltrane in his review for DownBeat magazine in December 1962.
The album contains 4 tracks.
