Arturia has announced KeyStep mk2, the next evolution of its compact controller and sequencer. This device retains the core idea of the original lineup — versatility, connectivity flexibility, and a playful approach — while evolving it in the directions that matter most to modern musicians.
KeyStep mk2 is positioned as the ultimate compact controller for hybrid studios and completely "DAWless" setups. It serves as a catalyst for creative ideas, combining generative tools and intuitive control.
It is a unique "idea machine" that doesn't require a computer or software to unlock its full potential. The device is designed for two main user groups:
- Musicians with synthesizers and modular setups who need keys and expanded connectivity in a compact form factor.
- Producers looking for creative functionality that fits perfectly into their workspace.
KeyStep mk2 is the bridge that unites your setup, making it tightly connected, compact, and creative.
_What's new in KeyStep mk2?

The new version builds on the original and adds key modern features. The most noticeable change is the new OLED display with a clickable encoder, providing direct access to all settings directly from the device.
The connectivity panel has been expanded with a USB-C port and the addition of a physical power switch on the back panel.
However, the main innovations are hidden inside:
- New generative tools, including the Mutate function for instant phrase transformation
- The updated arpeggiator now features 16 modes, 9 pattern variations, and advanced control
- The sequencer supports unquantized recording, pattern chaining, and live transformations
- Scale & Chord modes that make it easy to create harmonies and stay in key
- New functions (Spice and Dice) add controlled randomness, and sliders allow for real-time adjustment of gate and other parameters
_Features
KeyStep mk2 is equipped with everything needed to control any setup:
- 32-note slim keybed with velocity sensitivity and aftertouch
- The sequencer allows real-time recording (including unquantized), step editing, and pattern chaining
- The arpeggiator has 16 modes and a generative pattern engine
- OLED screen, clickable encoder, transport buttons, Tap Tempo, and RGB indicators for visual feedback
- Pitch Bend and Mod touch strips, as well as a sustain pedal input
- A full set of connectors for any situation — CV/Gate (Pitch, Gate, Mod 1, Mod 2), MIDI In/Out, Sync I/O, and USB-C

_Creative Ideas with KeyStep mk2
The new functionality opens up many avenues for experimentation. Here are just a few ideas to try:
Instant Variation
Use the Mutate button during a live performance to instantly change your sequences or arpeggios — from subtle tweaks to radically new melodies.
Add "Spice"
Use the Spice function to add controlled randomness to your rhythms, making patterns lively and unpredictable.
Flawless Improvisations
Activate Scale Locking, choose a key, and any note you play will be harmonically correct.
Sequence as Arpeggio
Record a sequence, then turn on the Sequence Arpeggiator to transform it into an arpeggio pattern that follows the notes you play.
Live Groove
Record your parts without quantization (Unquantized Recording) to preserve the natural, human timing of your performance.
Track Building
Create long compositions or entire live sets by linking multiple patterns together using the Pattern Chaining function.
Dynamic Editing
Change note durations (Gate Length Control) or slightly nudge individual steps (Live Step Editing) right during playback without stopping the music.
Personalized Control
Assign the CV Mod 1 / Mod 2 outputs to Aftertouch or Velocity parameters to get unique expressive control over your modular synthesizer.
