Recording vocals and guitar simultaneously often delivers a wonderful, lively sound from performers and songwriters, but having isolation between the instrument and voice provides much more flexibility during mixing for corrections and creative processing. Here, we will explore a proven microphone technique that helps maximize source isolation.
The main idea is to use two microphones in a "figure-8" pattern and take advantage of their excellent side rejection for isolating sources. Microphones with a figure-8 pattern are most sensitive at the front and back and least sensitive at the sides.
Watch the video below to see how this technique works.
Microphone placement for acoustic guitar
Place the first figure-8 microphone so that the front of the capsule is angled towards the 12th fret of the guitar.

Microphone placement for vocals
Position the second microphone so that the front of the capsule faces the vocalist, while the side points down toward the guitar. The edge of the capsule should also be directed at the guitar. Set this vocal microphone to a figure-8 polar pattern as well.

Distance to the microphones
Keep the microphones close to the sound source (12–20 cm) to capture a strong primary signal relative to the natural room ambience.

It is necessary to experiment with microphone placement to find the "sweet spot" where maximum isolation between sources is achieved. Also, consider the room acoustics, as both sides of the capsule capture sound. If you work in a treated room or a room with lots of soft furniture or coverings (like carpets), the reflections captured in the recording will be minimal.
Over time, once you find the optimal positioning, it will be impressive how well you can separate vocals and guitar. And you can be sure — your sound engineer will be very pleased with the result.
