Nirvana was an American rock band formed in 1987 in Aberdeen, Washington. The founders were Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. In the short three-year span of their mainstream career, Nirvana became a symbol of alternative rock and influenced modern rock culture. Their music was marked by dynamic contrasts and an important influence of the grunge scene. The band's success has earned them numerous music awards, including the Grammy and MTV Video Music Awards, and has sold over 75 million records worldwide.
Nirvana's Nevermind album, released in 1991 on DGC Records, is noted for its energetic sound and a variety of styles, including hard rock. It became an unexpected commercial success, reaching the top 10 in the charts worldwide, and the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" became the anthem of a generation. The album received numerous awards and critical acclaim, appearing on lists of the best albums of the 1990s by Rolling Stone and Spin magazines.
