Billie Holiday was a remarkable African American jazz vocalist. Her voice was unique – warm, deep, and emotional. She could convey a wide range of feelings in her singing, from joy and love to sadness and pain. Holiday was also a master of improvisation, often altering lyrics and melodies to make songs more personal. She was known for her strong social views and was an active figure in the civil rights movement, using her music as a form of protest against racial discrimination. Billie Holiday remains one of the most important and influential jazz singers of all time – a true star who inspired millions with her voice.
Billie: The Original Soundtrack is the official soundtrack to James Erskine’s documentary about the legendary Billie Holiday and offers a solid overview of her diverse body of work. The compilation includes her first recording of the blues classic “Fine and Mellow” from 1939, as well as the touching “Just One More Chance”, recorded just four months before her death in 1959. While some song version choices are puzzling – such as the overly sentimental rendition of “God Bless the Child” with The Gordon Jenkins Singer Chorus instead of the original 1941 take – the album still includes many highlights. These include the joyful “I Only Have Eyes For You” featuring pianist Oscar Peterson, the tender “I Loves You, Porgy”, the stylistically unique “Blues are Brewin’”, and the powerful “Strange Fruit”, which continues to deliver an emotional impact.
