She often changed the words and melody of songs to make them more personal. Holiday was known for her strong social views. She was an activist in the civil rights movement and often used her music to protest racial discrimination. Billie Holiday is one of the most important and influential jazz singers of all time. She was a true star whose singing inspired and captivated millions of people.
Lady Sings the Blues – an album by American jazz singer Billie Holiday, released in December 1956. This was the last album released on Clef Records before its absorption by Verve Records. The album was recorded during sessions in 1954–1956 and features Holiday performing with tenor saxophonist Paul Quinichette, trumpeter Charlie Shavers, pianist Wynton Kelly, and guitarist Kenny Burrell. The album received high praise from critics. It was released simultaneously with Holiday's autobiography, written with the assistance of William Dufty.
