Hysteria is the fourth studio album by English rock band Def Leppard, released on 3 August 1987 by Phonogram Records. It is the most successful of the band's discography, having sold more than 20 million copies worldwide, including 12 million in the United States. The title of the album was suggested by drummer Rick Allen. It comes from the drummer's 1984 car accident that left him with the loss of an arm. Following the release of Hysteria, Def Leppard published a book titled "Animal Instinct: The Def Leppard Story" written by Rolling Stone Senior Editor David Fricke. The book tells about the long process of recording the album and the difficult times the band went through in the mid-1980s.
