Description

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington – an American jazz pianist, composer, and leader of his own orchestra. He was born in Washington, D.C., and became famous through his performances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. He wrote over a thousand compositions, many of which became jazz standards. Ellington was a pioneer in the use of orchestras and big jazz bands. In the 1930s and 1940s, he worked with composer Billy Strayhorn, creating several significant works, including large musical pieces and suites. His music spanned a wide range of styles and went beyond genre categories, and he considered his creativity a part of American music. Ellington was awarded the posthumous Pulitzer Prize for music in 1999.

Cornelius "Johnny" Hodges – an American alto saxophonist, best known for his solo work with Duke Ellington's big band. He was the leader of the alto saxophones in the orchestra and one of the most influential saxophonists of the big band era, along with Benny Carter. Hodges began his career as a teenager in Boston and later played with musicians such as Lloyd Scott, Sidney Bechet, Luckey Roberts, and Chick Webb. He joined Ellington's orchestra in 1928, where his playing became one of the key features of the band's sound. After temporarily leaving the orchestra in 1951, Hodges returned before the big performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956.

Back to Back – a studio album by Johnny Hodges and Duke Ellington, released in 1959. The album features recordings made during sessions where Hodges and Ellington performed together. This is one of several collaborative projects by the musicians, highlighting their close cooperation. The album combines jazz compositions with elements of improvisation typical for both artists.

The album contains 7 tracks.

Side A:
  • Wabash Blues
  • Basin Street Blues
  • Beale Street Blues
Side B:
