Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian operatic tenor who gained worldwide fame through his recordings of operas and arias, earning the nickname "King of the High Cs". As one of the Three Tenors, he became widely known through televised concerts and media appearances. Pavarotti was most renowned for his performances in belcanto operas, early Verdi works, and Puccini operas. He sold over 100 million records, and the first Three Tenors album became the best-selling classical album of all time. Pavarotti was also involved in charity work and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Sir Edward Thomas "Ted" Downs was an English conductor who specialized in opera. He was associated with the Royal Opera House since 1952 and with Opera Australia from 1970. Downs was known for his work with the BBC Philharmonic and the Netherlands Radio Orchestra, as well as for conducting Verdi operas. He and his wife, Lady Joan Downs, assisted in their own suicides at the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland on July 10, 2009, which attracted significant media attention.

Arias by Verdi and Donizetti, recorded in 1968, begins with a selection of arias from four Verdi operas: Luisa Miller, I due Foscari, Un ballo in maschera, and Macbeth. The second side contains arias from four Donizetti operas: Lucia di Lammermoor, Il duca d'Alba, La Favorita, and Don Sebastiano.
