Soundgarden is one of the main representatives of the Seattle grunge scene, formed in 1984 and pioneering a style that combines hard rock energy with dark, emotionally charged lyrics. Led by the charismatic vocalist Chris Cornell, the band was distinguished by technically complex arrangements, unconventional rhythm and deep sound. After their breakthrough with Badmotorfinger and the huge success of Superunknown, which won them their first Grammy, Soundgarden became an icon of the 1990s. Despite their breakup in 1997, their contribution to the development of alternative music remains fundamental.

Down On The Upside, the band's fifth studio album, was released on May 21, 1996 and became a kind of experiment: Soundgarden reduced the aggressiveness of their sound, added psychedelic elements, and plunged even further into melancholic textures. The band produced the album on their own, avoiding the excessive influence of sound engineers, which allowed them to preserve their vision and inner freedom. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and topped the charts in Australia and New Zealand. The singles “Pretty Noose,” “Burden in My Hand” and “Blow Up the Outside World” became radio hits, but internal conflicts in the band eventually led to Soundgarden's breakup the following year. This release remained their last studio recording until their reunion in 2012.
