Viy is a Ukrainian ethno-rock band founded in Kyiv in 1991. The group, often called "legendary," describes its own style as "dark ethno fusion." Their music is characterized by a combination of folk-rock with elements of psychedelia and ethno (using instruments like the komuz, lyre, and flute). The band's work draws on ancient layers of Slavic folklore and mythology, particularly images of Ukrainian paganism, and their lyrics are known for their lyricism and fatalistic sorrow. The band's consistent leader, lyricist, and composer is Dmytro Dobryi-Vechir.

The album "Chorna rillia" ("Black Arable Land") is the debut work of the band Viy, first released on cassette in 1994, although it was created a year earlier. The album is considered one of the most mystical in Ukrainian music, offering listeners an immersion into the world of ancient Ukraine with its pagan and warlike traditions. The sound combines powerful, dark folk-rock with a gothic sound. The new vinyl edition is the first in the album's history and reproduces the original 1993 tracklist. The album is released on classic black 180-gram vinyl and comes in a gatefold sleeve with lyrics and archival photos of the band.
