Dire Straits is a British rock band that was formed in London in 1977. The group included such musicians as Mark Knopfler (vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals), John Illsley (bass guitar and backing vocals), and Pick Withers (drums and percussion). They were active from 1977 to 1988 and then again from 1990 to 1995. Dire Straits' musical style was marked by influences from various genres, including country, folk, blues-rock, and jazz. Their simple sound differed from punk rock and showed the influence of roots rock, which arose from pub rock. The band went through several line-up changes, but Mark Knopfler and Illsley remained the only members to work with the band throughout its history.
